BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Secretaire Biedermeier, c. 1820.
Wood.
Preserves key.
It presents restorations and damages caused by xylophagous.
Measurements: 162 x 112 x 50 cm.
Biedermeier style secretaire of volumetric structure with straight lines and simple forms that denote the functionality and beauty characteristic of this period. The wood, of a warm and bright tone, has probably been carefully selected to highlight the beauty of the natural grain. The upper part of the cabinet has a drawer that leads to the central area formed by a hinged door. The interior is completely compartmentalized. Finally, the lower area is organized into three drawers.
The Biedermeier style was a simplified interpretation of the influential French Empire style of Napoleon I, which introduced stylistic characteristics of the ancient Roman Empire styles, adapting them to the modern homes of the early 19th century. Biedermeier furniture used locally available materials, such as cherry, ash and oak woods, rather than expensive woods such as fully imported mahogany. While this wood was available near commercial ports such as Antwerp, Hamburg and Stockholm, it was heavily taxed whenever it passed through another principality.
