BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
After DONATELLO (Florence, 1386-1466).
"Saint Cecilia as Artemis", ca. 1900.
Bronze soffit.
Measurements: 55 x 38 x 2.5 cm.
The soffit we are now bidding for is based on the relief of Saint Cecilia made by Donatello in 1412, which represents the Contessina de Bardi as Saint Cecilia. The prototype of this sculpture was the Greco-Roman statue of Artemis, now in the Louvre, whose emblem was the crescent moon. As we can see, the saint-goddess wears a caul, a cloth cap covering her head, which is shaved well above the level of the ears at the back and gathered in a tight ponytail, whose locks and ribbons fall freely.
