BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Davenport. England, last quarter of the 19th century.
Root wood. Leather. Metal railing.
Measurements: 83 x 54 x 55 cm.
Exhibits sligthly wear consistent with age and use.
English desk of the "Davenport" type. The upper area with a slightly inclined desk has space to store sheets and other elements, and the main body houses drawers inside. The piece of furniture is raised on flattened spherical legs and is topped by a brass balustrade at the top.
The Davenport is an English piece of furniture with desk functions, born in the 18th century, characterized by its structure in the form of a console, with hidden drawers and, frequently, side drawers. It always has a sloping front top. Its name derives from the first known model, made by Gillows for Captain Davenport. It was a very comfortable piece of furniture for writing, of small size, and from it derived a portable model with which to write on campaign or on a ship. Its functionality made it a very popular piece of furniture in the 19th century.
