ARCHIMEDE SEGUSO (Murano, 1909-1999).

Pair of four-light candelabra. Designed by Archimede Seguso, they combine cobalt blue and transparent glass. From the turned stem sprout the sinuous arms and other serpentine forms, between which hang tears and crystal beads.
Subtle undercutting and faceted finishes decorate the crystals, which are also adorned with gilded bronze appliqués.
Born in Murano, at the age of 11 he began working in the kiln and perfected his skills by emulating 18th century glass pieces. At the age of twenty he became an excellent master glassmaker, distinguishing himself also with the newly born heavy glass making. He hires first Vittorio Zecchin and then Flavio Poli as designers in the family factory "Seguso Vetri d'Arte". In the 1930s he was invited to exhibit at the Venice Biennale, where, until 1972, the "Venice" Pavilion was dedicated to Murano glass.
