Large mirror in Venetian Murano glass

Large mirror in Venetian Murano glass. Italy late nineteenth century.

Rare and almost unique piece, this rectangular beveled mirror has a frame that is decorated with square pieces of cut glass, hand painted with enamels of various colors in floral and geometric shapes. Canes or carved glass bars on both sides with embossed decorations of geometric shapes.
Signs of wear and passage of time. Faults, flaws and some loose pieces.
Venetian mirrors were handmade on the island of Murano in Venice. Murano blown glass and detailed engravings make these pieces authentic works of art. There were not few centers of glassmaking in the Christian West during the late Middle Ages, but all eclipsed Venice from the early thirteenth century to the seventeenth century. Venice had for teachers to the Byzantines from whom he learned the enameling and gilding of the pieces and in the city and its neighboring island of Murano distinguished by the finesse, elegance, lightness, variety and fantasy of their products that today are admired in many museums and collections.
