The Andalusian culture and monuments generated, at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, an intense fascination among European intellectuals and artists, especially French and English. The Alhambra in Granada became the subject of literary and artistic works.
David Roberts, an emblematic painter of English Romantic landscape painting, traveled between 1832 and 1833 in Spain, Morocco and Tangier. On his return to London, his watercolors were made known to the general public thanks to their translation into engraving and lithography, under the name of Picturesque Sketches in Spain During the Years 1832 and 1833, and became very popular among a public intensely interested in the exotic and the oriental world. Thanks to his mastery of scenography, as he had worked in the theatrical field in his early years as a painter, Roberts achieved very effective compositions, adopting peculiar points of view.
