Salvador Espriu was a painter and fundamentally literary, he published his first book, Israel, when he was sixteen years old. In 1930 he began his academic training, studying at the University of Barcelona, where he studied law and ancient history. It was during his travels to exotic places such as Egypt, Greece and Palestine that he became familiar with the countries that gave rise to the great classical myths, and which would be so influential in his pictorial and literary work. Espriu received international recognition, thanks to the Montaigne Prize (1971). He also received the Prize of Honor of the Catalan Letters (1972), the Ignasi Iglesias Award (1980), the City of Barcelona Award (1982) and the Gold Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya (1982). He has also received honorary doctorates from the universities of Toulouse and Barcelona.
