Amethyst is a mineral of magmatic origin. It is formed in seams with solutions rich in iron oxides, which give it its characteristic purple color at temperatures below 300 °C. Because of its diffusion as a gemstone, there are several terms used in jewelry to describe the different shades of amethyst. "Rose of France" refers to light lilac amethyst, while "Siberian" is deep violet amethyst with red sparkles. Amethyst has been known for thousands of years, as it was used in ancient Egypt to create jewelry, personal seals and carvings. In the Middle Ages, Christianity adopted amethyst as a symbol of renunciation of earthly goods and chastity, and even today it is worn in the form of rings by many cardinals and bishops. Amethyst also symbolizes divine wisdom.
