The grandfather of the luthier Carl G. Becker Sr., Herman Macklett, was one of the first American violin makers and Carl followed in his footsteps from a very young age, building his first violin when he was only 14 years old. He later worked for Lyon & Healy, Hornsteiner and William Lewis & Son. After more than 40 years with the Lewis firm, Becker established his own business in Chicago with his son Carl F. Becker in 1969.
