Arthur Edward Smith (possibly 1880-1978) was an outstanding violin maker. He made instruments that were distinguished by their excellent shape, bowing and scrolls. For this he purchased select woods, including some that had been exhibited at the Crystal Palace in 1851. Between 1912 and 1914 he worked with Carl Rothhammer in San Francisco and then moved to Sydney, where he briefly continued his association with Rothhammer. In 1919 he founded AE Smith & Co. Ltd. in Hunter Street.
