Italian violin with inner label "Giovanni Paolo Maggini, Brescia".
With mother-of-pearl (flower) embellishment at the base of the string.
With American flag and marquetry eagle on the back.
Provenance: Private collection.
The violin needs to be reworked.
Wooden case with wear and tear marks.
Measurements: 62 x 21 x 9 cm (violin); 79 x 24 x 12 cm (case).

The luthier Giovanni Paolo (Brescia, 1580-1632) made instruments of beautiful workmanship and wonderful wood. He was apprenticed to Gasparo da Saló, in whose workshops he remained until he was 21 years old. Later, he also built instruments based on models by Girolamo Amati. He finally defined his own style.
