Member of the Royal Photographic Society. Rick Shepherd is a British photographer who has lived in Spain since 1983. He was born and raised near Manchester and studied dramatic arts at Manchester University. He began photographing in black and white with a Zenit camera in 1978, and his first major series documented Bilbao in 1983 following the floods of that year. Subsequently, he moved to Madrid, where he focused his work on the daily life of the city and the cultural movement of "La Movida". During that period, due to economic difficulties, he used expired Tri-X film and Valca brand paper, developing everything in the bathroom of the apartments where he lived. He never stopped photographing and, in 2005, he received a boost in the form of a Nikon D50. For the past four years, he has devoted himself entirely to photography.
His career has been recognized with several awards, including first prize in the photography contest "La ciudad en Fiestas 2023" of Alcalá de Henares, as well as in the Premios Universidad Viva in the Photography Contest "Celebra Marmoream" of the University of Alcalá in 2023. In 2024, he won fourth prize in the #díamundialfotografíafujifilm24 and an honorable mention in the B&W International Photography Awards. In 2023, he was a finalist in the photographic exhibition "The summer of our lives", organized by Cultura Inquieta.
He has participated in several exhibitions, including the PHOTOPOLIS AGRINIO PHOTO FESTIVAL in Greece, with the group show "Parenthood" at the Christos Kapralos Museum in 2024. That same year, he presented his solo exhibition A Liminal Vernacular in Alcalá de Henares and has been part of several group exhibitions organized by the Aula de Fotografía of the University of Alcalá. In the publishing field, in 2024 he published A Liminal Vernacular, a book with a prologue by Rafa Badía in Madrid.
