BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

LAWRENCE SCHILLER (New York, 1936).
"Marilyn Monroe," for "Something has got to Give," 1962.
Silver gelatin photograph, copy 73/75.
Hand signed and numbered.
Measurements: 50.5 x 61 cm.
The photojournalist Lawrence Schiller immortalized with his camera the life and scandals of Marilyn Monroe. The artist's work ranged from photography and non-fiction writing to directing Oscar-winning films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and The Man Who Skied Down Everest (1972). Schiller achieved early success as a photojournalist, publishing photographs of movie stars, athletes and politicians in magazines and newspapers around the world. Schiller's most iconic images capture a nude Marilyn Monroe shooting a swimming pool scene for the film Something's Got to Give, just months before her death in 1962. In addition to his memoir Marilyn & Me (2012), Schiller has published eleven books about the course of her career, many with her longtime collaborator, Norman Mailer.
Lawrence Schiller began filming Marilyn in 1960 on the set of "Let's Make Love" when she was just 23, accompanying her until the last years of her life. Marilyn Monroe celebrated her last birthday on June 1, 1962 with the cast and crew of her final film "Something's Got to Give," directed in 1962 by George Cukor and starring Dean Martin and Marilyn Monroe, in her last role. The film remained unfinished after the actress's death.
