The sculpture of manners of the nineteenth century, early twentieth century was born as a way to interpret a growing sense of national consciousness, now present in the middle class as it moved towards social hegemony. To some extent, the artists' concern was to deepen the vision of their country through a language, that of sculpture, that everyone could understand, thus helping the common people to understand the nature and meaning of their nationality, especially as it had manifested itself in the recent past, still vivid in the memory of the elders.

Reinhard Schnauder trained at the Dresden Academy and in the studio of E.J. Hähnelt. From 1886 he had his own workshop. He collaborated in the Görlitzer Gedenkhalle and in the building of the Dresden Academy.
