DESCRIPTION

MIQUEL APARICI (Barcelona, 1963).
"Lion of Ishtar", 2020
Sculpture made with recycled objects.
Provenance: Villa del Arte gallery

Measurements: 120 x 210 x 50 cm.

With a title that evokes the times of Nebuchadnezzar (the famous Mesopotamian lion of Ishtar), Miquel Aparici impregnates this lion sculpture with surreal connotations that drink from the "Nouveau réalisme". It is an ingenious assemblage in which he reuses old wood and metal objects, resulting in an elegant and mysterious creature. The lion thus reinvented becomes an allegory of love and war (attributes of the goddess Ishtar), combining beauty, mystery and intimidation in its unique anatomy.

Miquel Aparici's artistic beginnings are centered in the world of illustration, graphic design and comics. Paintings made from natural substances, assemblages of recycled objects that become zoomorphic forms that reflect the artist's particular vision of the natural world. Unconventional textures, colors and surprising forms with which he portrays a fantastic bestiary that challenges the imagination of any scientist or biologist. His work draws from surrealist sources such as Calder's mobile structures or Tinguely's kinetic sculptures.

Miquel Aparici's work has traveled to other cities around the world (New York, Copenhagen, Freiburg, Madrid, Vienna and Milan), and has been shown at international fairs such as ART Bodensee (Austria), ART Copenhagen (Denmark) and Art Fair of Cologne (Germany), as well as in institutions such as the Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona and the Temple of the Sagrada Familia, which in 2005 brought together a curious selection of several pieces by the artist inspired by the animals sculpted by Gaudí. Other spaces that have recently hosted an exhibition of his work are the Cristina Enea Foundation (San Sebastian) and the Miramar Cultural Center in Sitges (Barcelona).
