"Germain Pilot.
Patinated calamine.
Measurements. 78 x 30 x 26 cm.
Sculpture in patinated calamine in brown color, the piece of the XIX century is titled "Germain Pilot", and represents the famous French sculptor Germain Pilot (1537 - 1590) considered one of the most important sculptors of the Renaissance, author for example of the famous sculpture of the three graces in marble disappeared in the XVIII century and the resurrection of Christ in marble, preserved in the Louvre museum in Paris. This sculpture is in perfect state of conservation and is maintained with its original patina of the time.
Germain Pilon was the son of the sculptor André Piton. He was trained by his father and, perhaps, by Pierre Bontemps, Pilon was an expert in marble, bronze, wood and terracotta; from around 1555 he provided models for Parisian goldsmiths. He also knew how to draw. Much of Pilon's work was funerary monuments, especially in the Valois Chapel in the Basilica of Saint-Denis, designed by Francesco Primaticcio (unfinished). He was the favorite sculptor of Queen Catherine de Medici. He also made the royal coins. His sons worked in his workshop as well as Mathieu Jacquet, who ensured the success of Pilon's style for several decades.
