Delicate carved and gilded wood sculpture of the XVII century, created in France, represents an angel in prayerful attitude. The figure, with expressive serene face, shows his hands crossed on his chest in a gesture of devotion and humility. Details in his clothing reveal dynamic folds that evoke movement, while the rear area is not worked and shows the loss of the two wings. The gilded ornamentation reinforces the baroque splendor of the piece, characteristic of the period, and her posture conveys a deep spirituality and reverence.
Throughout Europe, sculpture played an important role during the Baroque era. It appears in public spaces, in palaces and private residences, in churches and cathedrals, government buildings, among others, and also reflects a wide variety of subjects, from saints, popes and heroes to famous people, statesmen, mythological figures... Formally, these are works of very free compositions, always marked by their dynamism and by a marked tendency to instability in the representation, in accordance with the taste for the curved line inherited from the Baroque.
