BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
JOSEP BUSQUETS ÓDENA (Fontscaldes, Tarragona, 1914 - Barcelona, 1998).
"Nu femení", ca. 1940's.
Stucco patinated bronze.
Signed and dedicated
Measurements: 79 x 23,5 x 22 cm.
In this youthful sculpture, Josep Busquets shows himself to be close to Aristide Maillol, which can be appreciated in the serene simplicity of the posture, in the harmony of the forms and the essential beauty of the female body. The limbs are soft and rounded, denoting the anatomy as a whole a sense of calm and solidity, with which the author seems to reinvent classicism.
Josep Busquets was trained at the School of Painting and Sculpture of Tarragona, under the direction of Joan Rebull. He made his individual debut in 1943, and began his career working mainly by commission, making religious images for churches and public monuments, such as the one dedicated to the "Castellers" (Valls, 1969). He worked mainly with the female figure, especially in small format. Most of the work of this sculptor is currently in the collection of the Josep Busquets Workshop in Valls.
