Son of the painter Eduardo Vassallo, Juan Luis began his training while still a child, in contact with personalities of the artistic environment, such as Mateo Inurria. In 1922 he entered the School of Arts and Crafts in Baeza, where his father was a teacher, and during this period he produced his first works. He then obtained a scholarship that allowed him to further his training at the Círculo de Bellas Artes and the Escuela de Artes y Oficios in Madrid, and in 1927 he won first prize for sculpture at the annual exhibition of the Casino de Clases del Ejército, with a work whose bronze reproduction was paid for by the sculptor Mariano Benlliure. Between 1931 and 1934 he studied at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando, and later moved to Avila as a teacher at the School of Arts and Crafts. In this same period he will obtain the third medal in the National Exhibition (1934). In 1936 he returned to Andalusia, teaching first in Jerez and then in Seville, until finally in 1958 he obtained a professorship at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Juan Luis Vassallo was an academician of San Fernando (Madrid), Cadiz and Seville, and was awarded first prize in the National Competition of 1936, first prize in the Circle of Fine Arts of 1946 and first medal in the National Competition of 1948, among other distinctions. He currently has monuments scattered throughout Spain, and is also represented in various collections.
