The one we now present is a nineteenth-century bust that faithfully follows a Roman original. Numerous international museums house other versions of this same bust of Dionysus.

Dionysus is considered the god of fertility and wine. Inspirer of ritual madness and ecstasy, he soon became an important character in Greek mythology. The Bacchic theme is a constant in the history of Western art since Ancient Greece, when such scenes used to adorn the vessels used in banquets. The Romans also represented it frequently in mosaics and other types of artistic manifestations.
