BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

After RAYMOND SUDRE (Perpignan, 1870 - Paris, 1962).
"The departure of Mercury".
Floor lamp with three points of light.
In patinated bronze.
Signed "Sudre".
Titled in cartouche.
With foundry stamp.
Electrified.
Measurements: 44 cm (height).

Sculptural lamp that follows models of Raymond Sudre. It is the sculpture of the Greek Hermes (the Roman Mercury), whom we recognize by the winged sandals and helmet. As a messenger god and intercessor between men and gods, here he is represented about to take flight, adjusting a sandal. With a slender and turgid body, he raises his right arm to hold the three-light lamp as if it were a torch.

Raymond Sudre learned to carve stone thanks to his father's profession, who was a marble worker. He moved to Paris to enter the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he was a student of the sculptor Alexandre Falguière and, after his death, of Antonin Mercié. In 1900 he won the second Grand Prix de Rome in sculpture for the statue David. Thanks to the success of his statue Héléna in 1905, he obtained a travel grant and visited Spain, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands.
