This sculpture shows the Greek goddess Athena on the winged horse Pegasus, a sculptural ensemble based on the myth that tells that Pegasus was found on Mount Olympus in the care of Athena. It was the goddess who tamed and trained the horse so that mortals could ride it.

The sculptor Henri Louis Levasseur was known for his Art Nouveau style representations of historical figures, mythological and religious themes. His creations are characterized by the realism and movement of his postures. Trained with Auguste Dumont, Gabriel Jules Thomas and E. Planche. Planche, Levasseur received numerous awards (both at the Salon des Artistes Français and at the Paris Art Exhibition). Today it is possible to find his works in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, in the Grohmann Museum at the Milwaukee School of Engineering and in the Columbia Museum of Art at the University of South Carolina, among others.
