BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Japanese school of the second half of the 19th century.
"Samurai".
Bronze sculpture. Wooden base.
Very high quality.
Measurements: 60 cm (height); 7 x 28 x 18 cm (base).

This high quality sculpture represents a samurai in martial attitude. His totally dynamic posture guesses the movement of the warrior and makes us understand that we are in the middle of a battle. While with his right hand he brandishes a weapon, the distinguished character impetuously raises a sphere with his left hand. It is possible that the functionality of this sphere with its opening lid in the shape of a Foo dog is that of a censer. In addition to the accurate anatomical treatment of the muscular character, with totally balanced and truthful movements, the careful work of the carving stands out, attentive to detail in each of its parts. Thus, the sphere completely embellished by floral patterns or the just qualities of the fabrics worn by the protagonist show the artisan's mastery. The sculpture rises on a base that emulates the finish of bamboo.

The samurai were the hereditary military nobility and officer caste of medieval and modern Japan from the 12th century until their abolition in the 1870s. They possessed great prestige and special privileges such as possession of two swords. They cultivated martial arts, indifference to pain and unswerving loyalty, participating in many local battles. During the peaceful Edo era (1603 to 1868) they became stewards and chamberlains, acquiring managerial experience and education.
