Monumental cup made of carved marble that is placed on a pedestal conceived as a pilaster of synthetic forms with sharp edges and pure lines. The cup sits on a polygonal base on which is the foot decorated with a carved garland, which runs around the perimeter. The shaft starts from this area with a rounded part that is interrupted by the upper area of the shaft, with a smooth finish. The base of the cup also presents a design in the form of gallons of clear classicist inspiration: Finally, a border gives way to the central area dominated by a carving in which several fauns are presented accompanied by a group of bacchante women, that is, women related to the cult of the god Bacchus, the god of wine. All the characters, arranged as a frieze, have been portrayed in different postures. They raise their arms in a dancing attitude, bringing great dynamism to the composition. Finally, the cup ends with a lip profusely ornamented with garlands, in which the effective play of the trepano stands out, accompanied by masks that stand out for their three-dimensionality.
This type of work is inspired by pieces made during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, especially in Italy. They were inspired by the art of antiquity. This interest was boosted by archaeological discoveries that revealed the tastes and customs of classical antiquity. It is true that during neoclassicism the art of antiquity was reinterpreted, adapting it to the taste of the time.
