Spanish school of the 16th century.

We are looking at a possible representation of Saint John the Evangelist, as indicated by his long hair and beardless face. It is a late Gothic piece in which the rigidity of the garments is still visible, although some movement can be seen in the lower part of the garments. During the Gothic period, the Romanesque differentiation between sculpture inscribed in the architectural framework and free-standing sculpture was maintained, although the latter experienced a considerable increase in its repertoire, due to the fact that the Church canonised more figures and the appearance of the mendicant orders, which were important buyers of free-standing religious images. There was also a greater typological variety, as earlier models such as the sepulchre diversified and new ones appeared, such as the pulpit.
