BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

HANS J. WEGNER (Denmark, 1914 - 2007) for ERIK JØRGENSEN.

Wegner's Ox Chair is an iconic piece of furniture that is impossible to overlook. A bold, sculptural chair that challenged contemporary understated aesthetics with its distinctive bullhorn-like headrest and voluminous body. The chair demonstrates Wegner's highly organic and artistic approach to furniture design and his desire to redefine traditional furniture. The Ox Chair lounge chair was designed by Wegner for Erik Jørgensen in 1960. The same year the chair was produced, it was introduced at a furniture fair in Milan. Here it immediately stood out and people admired it especially for its sophisticated construction - it was clear that it was a true design classic. The first versions of the Ox Chair that were put into production were individually upholstered and customized with curly hair and wool fabric. However, due to the complex upholstery, the chair was only successfully put into production in 1989. This happened after one of Erik Jørgensen's trips to Italy, where he discovered a new technique at the manufacturer Pirelli. After this, the Ox Chair was produced and manufactured with block foam, and later molds became part of the production at Erik Jørgensen. The chair stands out and has a very prominent and dominant design, which deviated from the principles that Wegner had been taught when he was studying at the School of Crafts. The name "Ox Chair" itself is clearly inspired by the masculine design and the horn-like headrest. The large chair seat rests on a delicate chrome-plated steel frame, which forms the legs of the chair..Throughout his career, Hans J. Wegner designed more than 500 pieces of furniture, of which the Ox Chair is said to have been one of the designer's favorites ever since its launch in 1960.
