Maria L. Angus was a British painter active between 1887 and 1910. Her work includes mainly watercolors of everyday life and nature. The genre of the work in bidding, which depicts a pensive violinist next to a music stand with a score, is called "casacons". It was one of the most demanded by the public during the 19th century. They were genre scenes set in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and their name comes from the jackets worn by the male protagonists.
