BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
After ANNE-LOUIS GIRODET DE ROUSSY-TRIOSON (France, 1767 - 1824).
"Preparatory study for the Révolte du Caire".
Charcoal on paper.
Measurements: 42 x 58 cm; 52 x 68,5 x 4 cm (frame).
The charcoal that we now bid is based on one of the sketches that Girodet de Roussy-Trioson made for the definitive version of the painting "The Revolt of Cairo" in 1810. The definitive is a momentous painting for French history commemorating the French suppression of an uprising in Cairo during Napoleon's campaign in Egypt (Palace of Versailles, MV 1497). More than ten years after this uprising, Napoleon commissioned Girodet to depict this episode.
Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy was a disciple of Jacques-Louis David and one of the paradigmatic examples of post-revolutionary French neoclassicism. The total classicism of his master is visible in his work, but the imminent romanticism is also perceived in his painting, both in subject matter and style, increasingly turbulent, but always with the appropriate neoclassical serenity.
