DESCRIPTION
FRANCISCO DOMINGO SEGURA, (Barcelona, 1893 - São Paulo, 1974).
"Figure reading".
Charcoal on paper.
Signed.
Measurements: 40 x 30 cm, 52 x 42 cm (frame).
Francesc Domingo studied painting and engraving at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, and in 1918 he joined the Agrupación Curbet, a precursor group of Catalan avant-gardism, whose members included, among others, Miró, Togores and Llimona. In spite of his multiple evolutions, he always maintained his preoccupation with structuralism, the fruit of his admiration for Cézanne. Between 1922 and 1927 he lived in Paris, where he approached cubism and expanded the colors of his palette. Then he went to Brittany, and in 1831 he returned to Barcelona, where the preciosity of his style earned him great prestige as a portrait painter. He exhibited regularly at the Sala Parés. After the Civil War his position worsened, and he decided to emigrate to America in 1950. After passing through Buenos Aires, where he soon recovered his former economic position, he settled in São Paulo, Brazil. There he joined the group of Catalan exiles, opened a gallery and alternated painting with teaching. Since then, and until his death, the memory of his homeland and the love for his adopted country coexisted in his work. Currently, works by Domingo Segura can be found in the Museum of the Abbey of Montserrat and in the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts of Cadiz.
