The work responds to a need to show the customs and popular characteristics that describe the society of the Philippines. During the 19th century, beginning of the 20th century, costumbrismo was an artistic trend, which achieved great recognition. In the case of the Philippine painters, this theme was of great importance, since in spite of being a Spanish colony, there was a great lack of knowledge of both its population and its customs.
Pedro Amorsolo, born on October 21, 1926 in the vibrant district of Sampaloc, Manila, grew up under the influence of the art that flowed through his lineage. As the nephew of renowned Filipino painter Fernando Amorsolo, he inherited not only a family name laden with prestige, but also an innate passion for creativity and artistic expression. His career flourished during the 1950s and 1960s, a period in which he left his mark on the art scene, contributing to the family legacy with his own vision and talent.
