Josep Bover Bennàssar was a self-taught painter. He stood out in great measurements for his self-portraits. His personality led him to become a popular character in the cultural and bohemian environments of Palma, to collaborate in the local press and to be an intense animator of gatherings. He exhibited several times in the Costa Galleries and participated in group exhibitions. He was a friend of the British painter, expert in Goya, Thomas Harris, and of the gallery owner Josep M. Costa. In April 1992, the Costa Galleries dedicated his last solo exhibition to him, entitled "Homage to José Bover". More recently, in 2015, the Can Prunera museum in Sóller dedicated to him the exhibition "El darrer pintor bohemi".
