Herend is one of the largest manufacturers of hand-painted porcelain in Europe. Vince Stingl founded Herend in 1826. Stingl had previously learned to work ceramics in Vienna. In 1839 the company was taken over by Mór Fischer, who made every effort to produce porcelain of excellent quality that met international standards. At the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, Queen Victoria of England commissioned a porcelain tableware with butterfly and flower motifs (see photo gallery) and Mór Fischer decided to call this model Victoria. It is the best known of all although it may not be the most beautiful. Pure nostalgia. In 1867 Emperor Franz Joseph granted Fischer a Hungarian noble title. From that moment on Fischer will start using the name Farkasházi. In 1874, Mór Farkasházi Fischer handed over the factory to his sons, who did not have the same enthusiasm: the factory went bankrupt. In 1896, the anniversary year of the Magyar conquest of the Carpathian Basin, the state offered to sell the factory to Mór Fische's grandson, Jen? Farkasházy, who took over the company. The government supported Farkasházi's ideas and from July 1, 1897, with annual state funding, Jen Farkasházy established a school for apprentices in this trade in Transdanubia. In 1900 the Art Nouveau products she designed (following her grandfather's techniques) received many awards at world fairs. In 1901 they won the gold medal at the International Ceramics Exhibition in St. Petersburg, and in the following years in Chicago, St. Louis, etc. In 1933 they celebrated their first centenary and in 1964 they opened the museum.
