RICHARD BURGSTHSAL (Nice, 1884 - Juan-les-Pins, 1944).
Art Nouveau vase. France, ca. 1900.
Bent glass.
Signed.
Measurements: 34 x 18 x 18 cm.
Hot bent glass vase, with cameo representation of sensual floral compositions in mauve tones on white. Richard Burgsthsal was a French master glassmaker, real name René Billa. From 1912, with Gustave Fayet, who acquired a sandbox and the Sablons glassworks in the Chevreuse valley, Richard Burgsthal settled in Bièvres. He developed his own furnace and his own manufacturing techniques, using the treatise of the monk Theophilus Theophilus Presbyter dating from 1125 and a treatise dating from 1202. He multiplied the tests in the Sablons glassworks until he discovered Chartres blue in April 1913.After 1925, Richard Burgsthal continued to create modern stained glass windows but mostly restoring old stained glass (Albi cathedral, cathedrals of Carcassonne, Narbonne, Saint Bertrand de Comminges...). Despite their formidable visual power and visionary dimension, Burgsthal's works remain confidential and underrepresented in museums and public collections.
