BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Large jug with handle CAPODIMONTE. Naples, 19th century.
Enamelled porcelain.
It presents seal in the base.
Measurements: 60 cm (height) x 23 cm (largest diameter).
The splendid decoration of this jug from Capodimonte shows the exceptional technique of the Neapolitan master craftsmen. Musicians with wind instruments, satyrs with bugles and robed figures mounted on carriages are displayed around the central body, while the handle is richly decorated with masks and winged victories. Mythological motifs are repeated below the spout of the jug, featuring a male face with abundant fur. Veneras and floral motifs dot the rest of the piece.
Founded in 1743 during the reign of Charles VII of Naples, the future Charles III of Spain, the Royal Porcelain Factory of Capodimonte was founded with the aim of emulating the great factory of Meissen, whose patron was Augustus the Strong, grandfather of Queen Maria Amalia of Saxony. After the Saxon factory, it was one of the first in Europe to use real porcelain, with kaolin, fired at a temperature varying between 700 and 800º, with a second firing at a higher temperature of between 1,400 and 1,500º. His production was very extensive, although he was particularly noted for his sculptures, both round and in relief, decorating all kinds of objects.
