DESCRIPTION

Louis Philippe watch, Martin Courtoy, Brussels, ca. 1840.
Gilt bronze.
In running condition.
Measurements: 44 x 32 x 11 cm.
Table clock, made of gilt bronze and conceived as a free-standing sculpture standing on an elaborate stepped pedestal. The base is smooth and prismatic, with smooth edges that reveal the Empire heritage, with "S" turned feet with chiselled details and a palmette that comes from the ornamental background of the neoclassical period, something common at this time. The intermediate step, more of an ornamental moulding than an independent area, is covered by a moulding of interlaced ribbons, again a very typical neoclassical motif. Above it is the upper level, again prismatic, with clean geometric forms. The crowning feature is a sculpture depicting a young lady dressed in neoclassical fashion. The posture of the protagonist gives great movement and expressiveness to the piece.
