Silver vessel that follows the victoria typology of the Montheit. The scalloped rim is characteristic of this typology, as well as the lion masks and other figures that decorate the mouth. Originally, Monteiths were used for cooling cups or rinsing glasses, as the cups were hung in the rim notches while their bases were immersed in cold water or ice water.
The company C.S. Harris & Sons Ltd. - which began as a manufacturer of silver spoons and forks, became in the 1870s a major manufacturer of silver and plated goods and supplier to retail outlets in England and abroad. C.S Harris & Sons Ltd. as it is known today was founded in 1817 and is believed to have been started by John Mark Harris, who was a spoon maker by trade. In 1843 he moved the business to larger premises in Hatton Garden, London, where it remained until 1852. The firm was registered under the name Charles Stuart Harris in 1881, and by this time was gaining a reputation for its utilitarian cutlery, which often followed 18th- and early 19th-century designs. Its cutlery line expanded to include gravy boats and tea trays, tea and coffee services, cups, bowls, dinnerware and condiment sets.
