DESCRIPTION

ANTONI VIVES FIERRO (Barcelona, 1940-2024).
"Julia".
Oil on canvas.
With title on the back.
Measurements: 60 x 50 cm; 80 x 69 cm (frame).

Vives Fierro began his studies at the age of fifteen at the Lonja de Barcelona, and then continued his training at the Círculo Artístico de Sant Lluc. In the latter he was a student of Jose Maria Garrut and the sculptor Tomas Bel. In 1961 he moved to Paris, and the following year he made his individual debut in Cartagena. Two years later he made his first personal exhibition in Barcelona, in the Sala Rovira. From 1970 onwards, he lived for periods in London, where he found themes for many of his paintings, as well as organizing several exhibitions (1971, 1973). Since the eighties he has focused his work again on the city of Barcelona, and in the mid-nineties Havana will be the theme of his painting. He has exhibited all over the world, in cities such as London, Geneva, Dusseldorf, Paris, Montevideo, Athens, New York, Havana and Beirut, as well as regularly in Madrid and Barcelona since the 1960s. Vives Fierro is a versatile painter who uses different techniques in his paintings, although in recent years he has opted for the combination of oil and collage. He develops a figurative style influenced by post-impressionism, focused on urban or suburban themes that have brought him fame, although he is also dedicated to landscape. Within his production as a graphic artist, his commercial and commemorative posters stand out. His work has been recognized with various awards, such as the Gold Medal and the Gerona Painting Prize (1979), the Ricard Canals (1980), the Clau de Barcelona (1998), the Sant Jordi Cross (2002) and the Joan Fuster Essay Prize (2003). In 1997 he received the Generalitat de Catalunya Award for the design of the "Joia de la Sardana". His work can be found in the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the Reina Sofia Museum in Athens, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Montevideo, the FC Barcelona Museum and the La Caixa de Pensions Foundation, among many other public and private collections.
