Trained in Santiago and at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, he exhibited at the Círculo de Bellas Artes to, in 1935, be sent to Argentina "on a cultural mission". It was in Latin America where García Lema began to exhibit continuously, showing his works in Rio de Janeiro, Caracas, Bogota, Santo Domingo and Haiti, among other cities. In 1945 he held his first exhibition in New York, where he complemented his artistic career with that of a writer, publishing "Surco y Simiento" in Caracas.
