DESCRIPTION

PEP AGUT (Terrasa, Barcelona, 1961).
Untitled, 1986.
Acrylic on paper.
Signed and dated.
Measurements: 25 x 33 cm; 44 x 52 cm (frame).
Pep Agut studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, University of Barcelona, between 1979 and 1984. Then he participated in the Games of the XXIII Olympiad of Los Angeles. Between 1988 and 1991 he settled in Cologne, until that last year he was invited to Paris by the Cartier Foundation. He returned to Barcelona in 1992. Agut has held several solo exhibitions in Spain as well as in London, Basel, Turin, Milan and Paris, among other cities. He has also participated in major events such as the Venice Biennale (1993), Prospekt (1996), the Biennale of Sydney (1998), Art Unlimited in Basel (2004) and ARCO (2010), and has taken part in group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tel Aviv (1993) and MACBA (2000), among others. He has coordinated and participated in debates and conferences, and has given seminars at the University of Barcelona. Starting from his dual training in the practice of painting and photography, Pep Agut focuses very early on his interest in the problems of representation, the role of the artist and the place of art. Understanding the space of art as the public space par excellence beyond any particular temporal or cultural condition, and concerned about the circulation of works of art and the modes of production of meaning, Agut develops a complex and personal work process that allows him to interweave his aesthetic project with his political positioning. Pep Agut works on his projects by researching a wide repertoire of techniques, media and concepts, in order to study the ideas that interest him over long periods of time, addressing questions related to representation and language. Agut is currently represented at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Centro de Arte Santa Mónica and MACBA in Barcelona, the ARTIUM in Vitoria, the Dhont-Dhaenens Museum in Deurle, the Rochechouart Departmental Museum in Limoges, the collections of the Bank of Spain, CAM, Fundación Cajamadrid and Coca-Cola, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Brussels, the European Central Bank in Frankfurt and the FRAC in Rouen, among others.
