Edouard Doigneau made numerous paintings, in oil and watercolor, idyllic and colorful as the one shown here, with picturesque scenes of his hometown (Nemours) and other villages of Brittany. In them, animals occupy a preferential place. In this type of work, the bold palette and synthetic brushstrokes seem to echo the fauve avant-garde that was beginning to emerge in Paris.

Initially destined for a military career, he entered the École polytechnique in 1885. He abandoned his studies in 1900 to devote himself to painting. He studied with Jules Lefebvre and Tony Robert-Fleury at the Académie Julian in Paris, and then traveled to Fontainebleau, Brittany, the Camargue, the banks of the Loire, Spain and Africa. However, he returned frequently to Paris, where he had a studio on Boulevard Berthier and frequented the Salons, exhibiting from 1908 to 1911 at the Galerie Georges Petit. Édouard Doigneau was a member of the Society of French Artists (hors concours), the Society of Watercolorists, the Society of Orientalists and the Society of Horse Painters. He won a gold medal for La ronde des bigoudènes at the 1906 Salon des Artistes Français. He maintained a close relationship with his fellow student, the painter Étienne Buffet.
