Parisian scene of impressionist brushstroke. Pierre Louis Léger Vauthier captures the nocturnal animation of the picturesque district of Montmartre, specifically of some market stalls with temporary awnings illuminated with lanterns.
Pierre Louis Léger Vauthier was a successful painter in his time. He won numerous prizes and awards. The son of a civil engineer, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. A student of Maxime Lalanne, he exhibited at the Salon from 1878 to 1881. In 1881 he marries the painter Marie Olympe Louise Gaudfernau in Paris. He obtained an honorary mention in 1884, a third class medal in 1887, an honorary mention at the Universal Exhibition of 1889, a second class medal in 1892 and a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. In 1895 he was named Knight of the Legion of Honor. He died in Beauchamp at the age of 70. He was buried on January 16, 1916 in the cemetery of Montmartre.
