The theme of the mockery of Christ by several Roman soldiers and executioners, narrated in the New Testament (in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark), had a great diffusion in the arts. In the present work, two executioners place the crown of thorns on Christ's head, while a third offers him a reed as a sceptre. The restrained aggression in the gestures of the three figures, who stare angrily at the Redeemer, stands out. The palette and qualities of the painting show the influence of the 17th-century Italian Caravaggio school. The skilful use of chiaroscuro lends drama to the scene while defining the space naturally. The emphasis on the ugly expressiveness of the wicked is also a Caravaggist device. Typically Baroque solutions.
