DESCRIPTION
Chest; Viceroyalty of Peru, early eighteenth century.
Wood covered with embossed leather.
It has a key and is in a good state of preservation.
Measurements: 26 x 40 x 27 cm.
Peruvian chest of the XVIII century, built with a wooden core that is completely hidden except for the base, covered on the outside by engraved leather and inside by a red cloth lining. It is a prismatic box, built with assembled one-piece boards, with a hinged top lid.
The decoration of the leather, entirely engraved, is profuse and complex, made with virtuosity and meticulousness, and reflects the decorative taste of the Baroque, reinforced by the tendency to "horror vacui" of the colonial schools. At the base of the chest, at the front, two large birds have been represented, on the sides, on a background of dense vegetation with a sinuous outline, which completely fills the background, as in the rest of the piece. This vegetal decoration is continued on the sides with lines. The lid has a central cartouche decorated with birds and large sinuous stems.
