Pair of candlesticks; France, Napoleon III, third quarter of the nineteenth century.
Patinated and partially gilded bronze.
Measurements: 63,5 x 27 x 28 cm (x2).
These French candlesticks are a splendid example of the style that predominated during the Second French Empire, also known as the Napoleon III period (1852-1870). Crafted in gilded bronze and patinated bronze, they combine with great mastery the neoclassical and baroque ornamental elements characteristic of 19th century decorative design.
Both candelabra feature an elegant and ornate central structure, culminating in multiple arms to hold the candles. Each arm is richly decorated with scrolls, acanthus leaves and floral motifs, reflecting the taste for opulence and refinement of the period. The triangular base with claw feet evokes the aesthetics of lions, a symbol of strength and power, while the gilt detail work adds a striking visual contrast against the dark tone of the patinated bronze. These pieces are not only functional, but also sculptural, meant to embellish the spaces of luxurious interiors.
These types of chandeliers not only served the function of illumination, but were true statements of status and sophistication. During the reign of Napoleon III, there was a strong interest in recovering and reinterpreting historical styles, especially neoclassical, but with an added theatricality that corresponded to the spirit of the Second Empire. The decorative objects of this period reflect the rise of the luxury market, fueled by industrialization, which allowed richly ornamented pieces to be produced more efficiently.
These chandeliers, designed to decorate the salons and dining rooms of the elite, symbolize the intersection between art and functionality. They were the protagonists of bourgeois and aristocratic interiors, which sought to emulate the splendor of bygone eras. Today, these pieces are valuable not only for their craftsmanship and beauty, but also as testimonies of a period when design and architecture marked the cultural and social identity of France.
