DESCRIPTION
Pair of candlesticks; France, restoration period, c. 1815.
Chiseled bronze, patinated, gilded with mercury and burnished.
Measurements: 65 x 29 x 29 cm (x2).
Pair of candlesticks in Restoration style and period. Each one of them has a body of lights with five chandelier type arms, gilded and decorated with vegetal motifs, plus a sixth light in the central lampshade. The bodies of lights are supported by shafts of triple fluted bronze set in a gilded bronze triple foot pedestal, richly carved with rocaille motifs and vegetal elements ending in lion's claw feet. The mercury gilding is of high quality, as evidenced by its opulent luster. The feet rest on a molded base. Acanthus leaves, carved lighters, floral corollas and foliate sheaths alternate in the gilt highlighting with the plain black of the shaft and base. All these motifs, and the overall design, are directly drawn from the ornamental background of neoclassicism.
