DESCRIPTION

Milling machine; circa 1850.
Brass, steel and metal.
Measurements: 27 x 33 x 21 cm.
Manual milling machine made of metal. This type of machinery or tools are used to create pieces with specific shapes. Milling machines evolved from the practice of rotary filing, i.e. operating a circular cutter with file-like teeth on the head of a lathe. Rotary filing and, later, true milling were developed to reduce the time and effort spent on manual filing. The first milling machine was built in 1818 and designed by the American Eli Whitney.
