The Louis XVI style contrasts with the Louis XV style by its simplicity and moderation; it returns to the rigor of geometric and rectilinear forms taken from classical architecture: the rectangle, the square, the circle and the oval, mainly, as opposed to the heaviness and excess of previous styles, the Louis XVI style is characterized by the lightness of its forms and the harmonious proportion of its dimensions. The decorative elements are also austere. The shapes of the ornaments are symmetrical and the inspiration is found in nature and ancient themes.
