Jacques-Bénigne Lignel Bossuet was a French bishop and theologian. Known for his sermons, speeches and literary works. He was educated at a Jesuit school before entering the Collège de Navarre in Paris, where he studied philosophy and theology. In 1652 he was ordained a priest and received a doctorate in Divinity. He spent the next seven years in Metz, where he honed his oratorical and political skills, before returning to Paris and consolidating his reputation as a great preacher. In the early 1660s, Bossuet preached regularly before the court of King Louis XIV at Versailles. He was appointed preceptor to the Dauphin in 1670 and elected a member of the French Academy a year later. In 1681 he was appointed bishop of Meaux, a post he held until his death.
