Violin bows are traditionally made with pernambuco wood (or pau-brasil), a material recognized for its combination of hardness, elasticity and lightness, which are essential qualities for a bow that needs flexibility and resistance. This wood comes from the Paubrasiliaechinata tree, native to Brazil, and has been the preferred choice since the 18th century because of its ability to transmit vibrations and respond precisely to the violinist's movements.
