DESCRIPTION

"Harlequin", early twentieth century.
Sculpture in polychrome wood and alabaster.
Measurements: 140 x 58 x 55 cm.

Sculpture of harlequin, of considerable size. The wooden body has been carved with great attention to detail and remarkable virtuosity. Dressed in his diamond-shaped costume, the personage bows slightly with his torso. He places one alabaster hand on his sword and with the other he holds the bicorn. His head is also carved in alabaster. The popular character from the Commedia dell'arte, known for his mischievous character, is shown here laughing and expressive. The courteous and theatrical gesture highlights the character's performative character. The iconic diamond suit is the harlequin's most recognizable trademark. This pattern represents his versatile, cunning and changeable nature, as the harlequin is a character who always adapts to situations. The sword or baton ("batocio") is another typical element of the harlequin. Originally, this symbolic weapon was used comically in fight scenes or to deliver exaggerated blows. The presence of the bicorn instead of the traditional cap with bells also indicates the versatility and adaptation of the harlequin to different periods, which even in the 20th century was claimed by many artists.
